An airfield southwest of Brandenburg near Berlin was assigned as the primary target. At 10:35, 25 Liberator bombers began takeoff, but one had to abort the mission early due to mechanical difficulties. The weather en route was again bad, which made the bombing difficult and precluded accurate visual bombing. As a result, the primary target could not be hit and a force of 13 aircraft was released on unknown targets of opportunity. 1 aircraft attacked Bucholz in the Nordheide and 10 aircraft bombed the port of Cuxhaven, north of Bremerhaven, with good hits in the port area. Countermeasures by enemy fighters against the formation were zero, but the anti-aircraft fire was moderate and fairly accurate. The unit suffered the loss of 1st aircrew (aircraft 42-52704 "SON OF SATAN" "P") piloted by First Lieutenant DE Tiefenthal, who was flying his 25th and final mission and had also been shot down in the disastrous raid on Friedrichshafen. This aircraft was last seen at 5230N-1225E in the clouds and under anti-aircraft fire. The aircraft was observed to turn on its back and begin an out-of-control tight turn, with no parachute jumps observed. 10 crew members are missing. Of the returning aircraft, 8 had sustained flak damage during landings at around 17:45. Source https://www.b24.net/MM041844.htm
